Health care in Lake and Sumter counties remains excellent due to so many Top Docs.
We are fortunate to live in an area where good health care is a priority. We have amazing hospitals, an incredible selection of doctors and medical professionals, and convenient offices and treatment centers in almost every town.
During the past three decades, a slew of talented doctors has come here, bringing with them vision and innovation.
In fact, staff writer James Combs compiled this list of medical milestones for our region:
1991—Dr. David C. Lew opened Florida Heart and Vascular Center. He later performed the first coronary balloon angioplasty in Lake County.
1998—The first open-heart surgery in Lake County was performed at Leesburg Regional Medical Center.
2001—The first hospital-based neurosurgery program in Lake County was introduced at Leesburg Regional Medical Center.
2002—The Villages Regional Hospital opened to serve residents of Lake and Sumter counties.
2003—The Florida Hospital Waterman Cancer Institute opened, providing patients with comprehensive treatment and care close to home.
2012—Florida Hospital Waterman (now AdventHealth Waterman) became Lake County’s first hospital to offer a robotic-assisted partial knee replacement procedure.
2013—The Personalized Urology and Robotics (PUR) Clinic opened at South Lake Hospital, offering robotic-assisted microsurgery to male patients.
The list goes on and on.
This month, we are introducing you to the area’s five-star physicians as rated by Castle Connolly, a health-care research company that identifies the nation’s best doctors and hospitals. Doctors who make this prestigious list were nominated by their peers and do not pay to be included.
This list may be helpful for anyone in need of a family doctor or a specialty doctor. After all, we no longer rely on word-of-mouth or simply choose the friendly neighborhood physician. We want a doctor with top-notch credentials and proven results.
Is health care a priority in our area? Once you look at this list of physicians, you’ll have no doubt.
Until next time,
