Surf’s up at The Sharon

Beachwear may not be the usual attire at the Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center in The Villages, but it might fly when Frankie Avalon appears there.

The singer and king of 1960s surfing films like “Muscle Beach Party,” “Beach Blanket Bingo,” “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini,” and “Ghost in the Invisible Bikini” is making a return appearance at the venue, according to If only his late co-star Annette Funicello were still around to join the fun.

The former teen idol turns 77 in September and he’s still working two shows a day. Performances are scheduled for 4pm and 7pm Aug. 7 at The Sharon, 1051 Main St. Tickets cost $35-$69 and can be purchased at or any Villages box office, or call 352.750.5411 for information.

Frankie’s musical hits include “Venus,” “Bobbysocks to Stockings,” “Gingerbread,” “Just Ask Your Heart,” “A Boy Without A Girl” and “Why,” a No. 1 record in December 1959.

He also appeared in more serious films alongside Alan Ladd in “Guns of Timberland” and John Wayne in “The Alamo,” as well as “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” and the hit musical “Grease.” In 1987, Frankie reunited with Annette in the summer movie hit “Back to the Beach.”
