State presents seminar to protect seniors against scams

Seniors can learn how to be “scam smart” at an upcoming seminar.

Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer, will present “Are You One in Five?” from 8:30am-12:15pm Monday, June 18, at Rohan Recreation Center, 850 Kristine Way, The Villages. The senior financial exploitation awareness event is open to anyone, and attendees may register at myfloridacfo.com/safe, according to an announcement by The Villages Community Development Districts.

The event will bring together representatives from senior service organizations, local and state agencies, and nonprofit organizations to share their expertise on senior financial exploitation and to provide ways to combat this crime.

Attendees will be able to gather information and resources to safeguard their money, gain a better understanding of how scam artists and scams work, as well as learn about common scams that target seniors, how to spot fraudulent behavior, and how to fight identity theft.

The presentation is part Operation SAFE (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation), an initiative launched by the Department of Financial Services. Events are open to seniors, their family, and caregivers to help inform, empower, and protect Florida’s seniors from financial scams and fraud, the department website states.
