The 2020-21 school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, for Lake County Schools and will include Veterans’ Day as a student holiday, five days off at Thanksgiving and a little more than two weeks off for winter break.
The new calendar was approved by the School Board at its Dec. 9 meeting after employees and the community had an opportunity to choose between two options through an online survey.
The options had some distinct differences:
Option 1 had the earlier start date of Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, with Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, and Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020 (Veterans Day) as days when students do not attend school. They would return after Winter Break on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021.
Option 2 had a later start date of Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020, with Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, and Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020 (Veterans Day) as days when students attend school. They would return from Winter Break on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.
Links to the surveys were posted on the district web site and on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Additionally, a notice was sent home to parents districtwide via the Peachjar web application.
With 78 percent of employees and 73 percent of the community choosing Option 1 in the survey, staff recommended approval of Option 1 to the School Board, and board members voted unanimously in favor of Option 1 at their meeting.
