Police vs. fire department hoops game benefits ailing student

In the “Battle of the Shields,” Clermont police officers will play members of the Clermont Fire Department in a benefit basketball game to help support student-athlete Devonte Davis, in photo, who is battling a rare form of cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma.

The game will tip off at 6pm Tuesday, May 23, at the East Ridge Middle School gymnasium, 13201 Excalibur Road, Clermont. Tickets for the game will be sold at the event as well as the East Ridge Middle School office.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Davis family for 13-year-old Devonte’s medical expenses, a police department news release states. Donations also may be made at gofundme.com/DevonteWillDefeatCancer.

“This young man has already begun his cancer treatments and is facing them like a true champion,” Clermont Police Chief Charles Broadway says in the release. “We are proud to join with the family and Clermont Fire Department to support this worthwhile event.”
