Mount Dora police charge two men with grand theft from Walmart

Someone may have to rethink their Christmas wish list. Mount Dora police arrested two men who allegedly tried to leave Walmart with two shopping carts full of Segway miniLite scooters and Swagtron T5 hoverboards.

Andre Lamar Johnson, 26, of Daytona Beach, and Dustin Lamar Brown, 27, of Eatonville, each were charged with third-degree grand theft and resisting an officer without violence and taken to Lake County Jail, the police report states. Both men were released Thursday after posting $3,000 bond and face Jan. 2 court dates.

Around midnight Wednesday, officers noticed a parked car with no occupants and its engine running on the west side of Walmart, 17030 U.S. Highway 441, according to the report. Two men pushing shopping carts filled with merchandise came around the corner, and when the officers announced themselves, the men fled on foot. A Segway chase would have been more dramatic, but the suspects soon were apprehended anyway.

The carts contained four Segway miniLites and three Swagtron T5 hoverboards valued at a total of $1,858. Store surveillance video showed the men pushing the carts through the sporting goods department toward the fire exit and down a loading ramp to their waiting vehicle, the report states.
