Leesburg teacher wins classroom makeover

Fifth-grade teacher Caryn Long of Treadway Elementary School in Leesburg shed tears when she saw her newly renovated classroom during a special reveal this week.

She was Lake County’s winner of the 2019 Renovate to Educate Contest sponsored by Addition Financial.

“I’m just blown away; my jaw just dropped when I opened the door, and all I can think about is when the kids walk into this room,” she said. The first day of school is Aug. 12. Her colorful classroom is decorated with inspiring quotes on the wall from Albert Einstein and Carl Sagan, and a variety of items to help prepare students as future leaders. The teacher’s vision for her classroom was to instill a love of science in students through the classroom theme of Diversity is Science.

Caryn has been at Treadway for three years and is going into her 32ndyear of teaching.

“Kids don’t often see the possibilities for themselves and the kind of careers, and now they can walk in here and get instantly inspired, and for that, I’m very grateful for what you have done for the children,” she said to the reveal crowd filled with officials from Addition Financial, Lake County Schools, and interior design students from Seminole State College.

The college students created the winning classroom makeovers as part of their internships with Addition Financial, and the credit union provided up to $2,000 per classroom.

“This is one of our favorite things to do,” added Addition Financial CEO Kevin Miller.
