Geek Fest is back and that means for one day, all nerds, cosplayers, and steampunk fans rule the Earth. Or at least Astor. The free event is scheduled from 9am-2pm Saturday, Aug. 25, at Astor County Library, 54905 Alco Road.
Now in its third year, Geek Fest draws hundreds of people from across Florida, according to a news release. The whole family can enjoy a variety of exhibitors, authors, and activities, including a cosplay competition with prizes for the best-dressed child, teenager, and adult.
One of the biggest Geek Fest supporters has been the Society for Creative Anachronism’s Barony of Darkwater. The SCA wows audiences with demonstrations on renaissance crafts and weaponry, and visitors can watch live combat shows with trained fighters.
The Renaissance Robotics team’s activities will be highlighted by Joust Bots, special robots made just for this event; the American Society of Engineers will present interactive STEM activities; and the Splendid Teapot Race is a battle among teapots retrofitted with wheels and other gadgetry. Gaslight Batman also will make a special appearance at the festival.
“Jump into another time and place where you can rub elbows with medieval royalty, steampunk heroes, and robotic wonders,” Jonathan Dolce, branch supervisor of the Astor County Library, says in the release. “It’s a treat for the entire family, and best of all, it’s free. Come in costume or just to take a gander.”
Other participants will include Traveling Trinkets, the Ocklawaha Sutler, Tripping on Legends Paranormal Hunters, authors Christopher Balzano and Natalie Crist, the Time Travelers Alliance of Florida, and the Astor County Library Cosplayers, and the Who Cut the Cheez? food truck will be onsite.
