Leesburg hosting annual Juneteenth celebration

Juneteenth, one of the country’s longest-running celebrations, will be honored Saturday in Leesburg.

The city’s Juneteenth Parade and Carnival starts at 10:30am with a parade from Beecher Street and Simmons Avenue to Berry Park, 2121 Johns Ave. The carnival starts when the parade arrives at the park, and continues until 2pm.

Dating to June 19, 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This year marks the 14th annual carnival held in the city of Leesburg.

The carnival includes games and rides, a DJ and entertainment, vendors, free food, bottled and soda for $1, a photo booth, clowns, face painting, raffles, and more, a city news release states. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. All children ages 17 and younger must be supervised by a parent.
