Jump into Water Safety Saturday

Community pools around Lake County are participating in Water Safety Month by offering safe swimming events from 10am-1pm Saturday.

Activities will include free swimming safety lessons and CPR demonstrations, life-vest education, mock drowning exercises, swimming lesson registration, open swimming, exhibits, and more.

The locations include Umatilla City Pool, 16 Lone Star St.; Golden Triangle YMCA, 1465 David Walker Drive, Tavares; Clermont Arts & Rec Center (sponsor: Swimming for Life), 3700 S. U.S. Highway 27; Venetian Gardens, 201 E. Dixie Ave., Leesburg; Gardenia Park, 201 W. Berckman St., Fruitland Park; and Mount Dora City Pool, 1200 N. Unser St.

Lake County has more than 1,000 named lakes, so it’s important for citizens to be aware of water safety to prevent drowning and injuries. Each day in the United States, 10 people die from drowning, and two of those are children under the age of 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Water Safety Month is hosted by Lake County’s Water Safety Advisory Committee, in partnership with Lake County commissioners, Lake County Schools, Lake EMS, Florida Department of Health in Lake County, Swimming for Life, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Department of Children & Families, Golden Triangle YMCA, and the cities of Tavares, Umatilla, Clermont, Leesburg, Fruitland Park, and Mount Dora.
