Lake County has more than 1,000 named lakes, so it’s important for citizens to be aware of water safety to prevent drowning and injuries. Each day in the United States, 10 people die from drowning, and two of those are children under the age of 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Water Safety Month is hosted by Lake County’s Water Safety Advisory Committee, in partnership with Lake County commissioners, Lake County Schools, Lake EMS, Florida Department of Health in Lake County, Swimming for Life, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Department of Children & Families, Golden Triangle YMCA, and the cities of Tavares, Umatilla, Clermont, Leesburg, Fruitland Park, and Mount Dora.
