The following are a couple of historical tidbits that occurred in Lake County during the month of August many years ago.
They were documented in “The Bulletin of the Lake County Historical Society,” (the organization’s old newsletter), in December 1962.
- The first session of the Board of County Commissioners was held in a long narrow building known as Mendenhall Store in Yalaha on Aug. 2, 1887.
- The first Board of County Commissioners meeting was held in Tavares at what is now the residence of Judge Tally on Aug. 14, 1888.
If interested in viewing the information, along with loads of historical artifacts, photos, and other sources of information, visit the Lake County Historical Museum at 317 W. Main St., Tavares from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.
