Can your Chihuahua run like a deer? Do you like salsa both on the dance floor and with your chips?

Clermont and Lake County residents are invited to dance in the street, enjoy food and drinks with a salsa flavor, and watch Chihuahua racing at the Sips and Salsa Festival. The free event is scheduled from 4-10 pm Saturday, Sept. 8, at the newly reinvented Minneola Avenue in downtown Clermont, a news release states.

That’s “sips,” not “chips,” but some of those probably will be available, too, for a salsa-making competition, along with other cultural cuisine, a domino tournament, cigar demonstrations, and a kids’ zone.

Mambo Lebron and His Orchestra will provide Latin beats. The orchestra has played at some of the country’s hottest entertainment venues, including the Copacabana, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden, all in New York City.

To enter your Chihuahua in the race, go to to download the application, or call 352.708.5975 for more information.

The festival was still in need of volunteers as of Friday, Sept. 7. There are several shifts available throughout the entire event, 4-10:00pm, including shifts suitable for high school students who are in need of Bright Futures hours. The shifts that are suitable for high school students are marked and all positions are suitable for anyone over the age of 18.

Volunteers can view the different shifts on the SignUp Genius page. For questions about what each position entails, contact Amanda Nethero at or 352.394.4191.
