Crowning achievements

Thanks to Linda Watts, the spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in Florida. As director of the Miss Leesburg Scholarship Pageant for more than 30 years, she has taught local youth about the importance of giving a hug to someone who is lonely, a kiss to someone who won’t be here tomorrow, and providing a necessity to someone who has nothing.

Now, your daughter can experience the joy of altruism.

The 33rdannual Miss Leesburg Scholarship Pageant will be held Sept. 28 inside the Leesburg High School auditorium. Girls ages 4-19 are invited to enter and must live or attend school in Leesburg, Yalaha, Fruitland Park, Lady Lake, or The Villages. There are five age divisions, and entry deadline is Sept. 23.

Winners will represent Leesburg at special events, parades, and community activities throughout the year as the hometown representative. Scholarships are also rewarded.

Linda’s efforts and contributions throughout the years have not gone unnoticed. Among her many awards include People Magazine’s All-Stars Among Us in 2009 and the Lake Community Action Agency’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year. She was also one of only 10 people throughout the country to receive the University of Phoenix Volunteer Leader Award in 2010.
