Clermont police arrest two men in theft of $100,000 of jewelry

Two Groveland men have been charged in the theft of more than $100,000 worth of jewelry from a Kmart store in Clermont.

Isaac Fitzgerald Soudat, 18, surrendered Monday to Clermont police after the other suspect, Christopher Lee Freeman, 20, turned himself in Oct. 10, according to police reports. Both men were charged with commercial burglary and grand theft over $100,000, and face arraignment in November.

Around 4:30am Sept. 2, Clermont police officers responded to a burglary alarm at Kmart, 1002 E. Highway 50, a news release states. When officers arrived, they observed the front glass door smashed and several pieces of jewelry stolen from a glass display case. Interior video surveillance showed two masked individuals smashing the glass with a hammer and then stealing jewelry valued at $104,100.

Detectives discovered several pieces of the stolen jewelry were sold to pawn shops in Minneola and Winter Garden. Through interviews and additional investigative work, they were able to identify the suspects.

All of the jewelry that was reported stolen by Kmart representatives has been recovered, the release states.
