The word “icon” gets tossed around a lot these days, but in the annals of rock ’n’ roll, Chubby Checker and his song “The Twist” are truly iconic.
So, let’s twist again when Chubby and the Wildcats perform at 8pm Friday, Feb. 2, at the Clermont Performing Arts Center, 3700 S. Highway 27. Ticket prices range from $27.55-$60.62 and are available at clermontperformingarts.com or by calling 352.394.3500.
In less than three minutes, Chubby and “The Twist” revolutionized music and pop culture, a promotional release states. After he performed “The Twist” on “American Bandstand” in 1960, teenagers found a new way to express themselves through dancing. The show’s longtime host, the late Dick Clark, once said, “The three most important things that ever happened in the music industry are Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and Chubby Checker.”
“The Twist” is the only single to hit No. 1 on two separate occasions and, according to Billboard, it was the No. 1 single of the 1960s. Chubby also found success with songs such as “Let’s Twist Again,” “The Fly,” “The Hucklebuck,” and “Limbo Rock,” and he has had 36 hit records. “Let’s Twist Again” brought Chubby a platinum record and the first rock Grammy, and he has sold 250 million records during his career, the release states.
