Birdwatchers poised for migration count

Before the rainy season arrives, May brings the last of spring’s migrant birds to Lake County as they move north toward their breeding grounds.

The North American Migration Count, held in May each year, is scheduled from 7:30-11am Saturday, May 13, at Green Mountain Scenic Overlook & Trailhead, 20700 County Road 455, Minneola.

The count, which provides a snapshot of bird migration across North America, is part of Cornell’s eBird Global Big Day. Binoculars are required, and experience in bird identification is a plus but not required.

Blooming wildflowers and an increase in butterflies and dragonflies also make May an ideal month to get outdoors and explore Lake County’s parks, trails and recreational activities.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend free, family-friendly guided nature activities throughout the month.

To make a reservation for an event or for more information, call 352.253.4950, email parksandtrails@lakecountyfl.gov, or visit bit.ly/1rFvqOP or www.facebook.com/LakeCountyFLParks.

Residents also may share their input on the future of parks and trails in a brief online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/LakeCountyCommSurvey.
