Bebop and birdies: Golf tournament will aid Eustis schools’ jazz bands

A parent is stepping up, and teeing up, to help the jazz programs at Eustis High School and Middle School.

Brian Clemens is organizing the first annual Eustis Jazz It Up Golf Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11, at Black Bear Golf Club, 24505 Calusa Blvd., Eustis. Check-in starts at 7:15am, followed by an 8:30am shotgun start.

The tournament is seeking more participants and sponsors. To register to play or to sponsor a hole, contact Brian at 407-617-7269 or The entry fee is $70 per player or $280 per team, and hole sponsorships cost $100. Lunch will be provided.

The proceeds will benefit the jazz programs by helping to pay for various needs, such as an awards dinner, transportation to competitions, and possibly instrument rentals, Brian says.

Matt Flenner directs the Eustis High band program, and Gerry Ricke instructs the middle school bands. Brian’s daughters, Katherine and Addison, are in the jazz programs, and his son, Jacob, also participated before graduating. However, the programs have suffered a decline in sponsors, Brian says.

“I just decided to try to do something to help out because for a long time I’ve seen the benefit of my kids being in the program,” Brian says. “It’s helped with the grades and the discipline and those types of things.”

Brian hopes to raise several thousand dollars this year and make the golf tournament an annual event. Initial response has been strong, with registration by 10 teams of four golfers each, and sponsorship of eight to 10 holes.

“We can learn from this first experience—what things worked, what things didn’t work—and then expand it to try to get more participants as well as more sponsors,” he says. “So, even after my kids have graduated, maybe this tournament can continue to help support this program in the community.”
